Cancer care within cycling distance?

The Leukaemia Research Fund Glasgow Bikeathon 2005 will take place on Sunday 21 August
550 cyclists will saddle up in Glasgow on Sunday 21 August 2005 to raise funds for the Leukaemia Research Fund. It is hoped that this year's total will top the £41,000 raised last year.
The University of Glasgow is working with the Leukaemia Research Fund to provide a major new research centre in the heart of Glasgow's medical community. The new centre will be based at Gartnavel hospital and will serve patients throughout Scotland.
Amongst those taking part will be Fionna Eden-Bushell, a 64yr old who is being treated for a very rare and incurable lymphona - a cancer of the blood. After a successful operation to cure bowel cancer 16 years ago, Fionna asked her physician for advice about supporting a cancer charity. She explains: 'He suggested the LRF because it puts a higher proportion of its financial resources towards research than other similar charities. I am delighted to make a small contribution to the Leukaemia Research Centre at Gartnavel, knowing that the money will be well spent. I owe my continued good health to the wonderful care I have received at both the Western Infirmary and Gartnavel General - both within cycling distance of my home!'
As part of the on-going fundraising campaign the LRF Glasgow Bikeathon is a fun family event where participants can cycle either 13 or 26 miles over a pre-determined, stewarded route, starting and finishing in Kelvingrove Park in the west end of Glasgow. £2.175 million of the £2.25 million target has already been reached so the Bikeathon will help in the final push for funds.
The deadline for entry to the Bikeathon is 5 August. The maximum number of entries is 550 and 220 have already applied so enter soon to guarantee a place. For the first time applications can be made online at www.glasgowbikeathon.co.uk It costs £7.50 to enter for adults, and £3 for children. Children must be over seven years old, and all under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. All entrants receive a t-shirt in their entry pack, refreshments on the day and a commemorative medal at the finish line. The start time will be 11am this year.
Not only are we looking for cyclists on 21 August, we also require stewards (with and without bikes) to help on the day. Please let us know if you can help, or if you know of someone who can. We have a huge variety of jobs available to suit all skills!
