University of Glasgow Medical School receives Civic Trust Award 2004 and commendation for St Andrews Building
The University of Glasgow's Wolfson Medical School continues to receive accolades for its style and design.
One of only two Scottish projects to receive the coveted Civic Trust Award, the Wolfson Medical School was honoured as a project that reaches the highest standards in terms of both design and contribution to its environment - a project which makes a difference to the community.
Principal, Sir Muir Russell, said:
'The University is very proud to have received such a prestigious award for a unique building. The Wolfson manages to combine both practicality and beauty. Not only does its state-of-the-art facilities contribute to maintaining Glasgow's position at the forefront of medical education, it does so housed in a building which enhances its surroundings.'
The Civic Trust Awards are seen as the most diverse award scheme in Europe, recognising the very best in architecture, planning, environmental design, landscape and urban design. The Awards promote the positive impact that development can have in improving quality of life in urban areas.
As an award winner, the Wolfson Medical School joins projects which are seen as being at the forefront of people-centred development and which show that there is much to celebrate in today's urban areas.
In addition to the award for the Wolfson, the University also received a commendation for the St Andrews Building, housing the Faculty of Education.
Bob Wilson, Director of Estates and Buildings at the University of Glasgow said:
"To be one of only two Scottish projects to win a Civic Trust Award 2004 is a great achievement for the Wolfson Medical School and the University. Together with the commendation of the St Andrew's Building, it is gratifying that our commitment to enhancing the city's townscape is being recognised."
The project earned the praise of Vivienne Newlands, the Civic Trust Awards Manager, who commented:
"The Civic Trust Awards prove not just that high quality, inclusive development exists, but that we do not need to settle for anything less. We are pleased to recognise those clients, architects and developers who take a holistic view, and who should be immensely proud of the places they create."
