From tomorrow, 5 February the University of Glasgow's unparalleled collection of Whistler paintings, prints, letters and memorabilia will be within reach wherever you are. This unique collection will now be available on the first website of its kind: www.mr-whistlers-art.info.

American-born painter James McNeill Whistler was one of the most influential figures of the late 19th century art world. Now information about the artist and his colourful life and work will be available online, providing resources for a wide range of learning activities and allowing anyone interested, anywhere in the world, to see these important works.

'Hopefully this website will make our unique Whistler collection accessible to a wider range of people who might not normally visit galleries or might not be able to visit the University of Glasgow', said Monica Callaghan, Education Officer, Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow.

The website provides not just a teaching resource, but also a widely accessible showcase of the treasures that are a permanent part of Scotland's cultural heritage. The launch of the website will mark the close of the highly successful Whistler 2003 Centenary celebrations and will promote ongoing developments in making the University's collections more accessible.

The website is funded by the Scottish Museums Council and Heritage Lottery Fund.
