Scottish Centre for War Studies Anglo - Japanese Alliance 1902 Centenary Conference
Published: 11 September 2002
International conference to be held at Glasgow University
This international conference is designed to mark the centenary of the Anglo-Japanese alliance signed in 1902. Although its focus is firmly historical, the alliance remains relevant today when Anglo-Japanese relations are once again close.
The conference will begin with the diplomatic and military context of the alliance and will then move on to discuss the economic, commercial and cultural aspects of relations in the period 1902-1922.
This is a particularly appropriate focus for the University of Glasgow as students from Japan came to the Department of Naval Architecture in its early days.
Speakers will be gathering from all over the world ヨ Australia, Japan, USA and Canada - to discuss diplomatic and military relations and operational aspects of WW1 as well as overseas investment and technology transfer.
A selection of speakers include ;
Ian Nish, Hew Strachan, John Ferris, Antony Best, Haruo Tohmatsu, Charles Schencking, John Chapman, Chiharu Inaba, Janet Hunter, Maggie Tatarkowski, Peter Lowe and Yoichi Hirama.
The conference is open to everyone at no charge, and will be held in Room H13, University Main Building, with Registration in 2 University Gardens between 1pm-4pm on the day of the conference and afterwards at the venue.
The conference begins with the opening paper by Ian Nish at 5pm on Thursday 12 September. The conference runs from 9am-5.30pm on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th September.
The Scottish Centre for War Studies and the Europe Japan Research Centre have expressed their thanks to the many organisations who have supported the conference ヨ Daiwa Anglo Japanese Foundation, The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, The Japanese Foundation and Toshiba International Foundation.
