The annual University Boat Race between Edinburgh and Glasgow will take place this Saturday, June 8th 2002, at Glasgow Green.
2002 Boat Race: Saturday June 8th 2002, Glasgow Green
The race was first held on the Clyde in 1877 in front of 50,000 spectators and, apart from the war years, it continued annually until 1996. Re-started by the students in 1999, support for the event has been growing steadily since.
The programme for the day is as follows:
1.30 pm The toss.
2.00 pm Women's reserve race.
2.15 pm Alexandra v Argonauts : Graduate men's race.
2.35 pm Men's reserve race.
2.50 pm Alexandra v Argonauts: Graduate women's race.
3.10 pm Walter Scott & Partners Edinburgh Glasgow Women's Boat Race.
3.25 pm Alexandra v Argonauts : Graduate mixed race.
3.50 pm Walter Scott & Partners Edinburgh Glasgow Boat Race
The 2002 Boat Race will follow a similar format to last year and follow the 2.5km course from Cowan Bend to the monument. Main areas for spectators are at the start, the footbridge and the viewing platform at the end, near the People's Palace.
Both Edinburgh and Glasgow have squads of oarsmen and women in training for the event and both teams will field experienced rowers in their line-ups. Glasgow recorded a narrow victory in last year's men's race. Edinburgh has won more races overall, though the record of results is far from complete. Based on available records, Edinburgh has notched up 17 wins against Glasgow's 16.
