The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra will give the first performance of the full 11-piece brass version of Sally Beamish's 'Caprington Doubles - A Fanfare for Gilmorehill' at the opening of a concert programme reflecting music and composers associated with the University. The concert will be held in the University's Bute Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday 20 October.
This piece was commissioned from Miss Beamish by the University in celebration of the 550th anniversary of the foundation of the University of Glasgow. A version for organ was first performed on 21 June 2001 at the University of Glasgow's Commemoration Day when Sally Beamish was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music (DMus) for her services to musical life in Scotland.
Several of Sally Beamish's works have had their world premieres throughout Scotland and beyond. She is at present the joint composer-in-residence with the Swedish and Scottish Chamber Orchestras, along with Swedish composer Karin Rehnqvist.
Her orchestral output is considerable, including two symphonies, and concertos for violin, viola, cello, oboe and saxophone. At present she is working with Scottish writer Janice Galloway on a full-length opera based on the life of Mary Shelley, creator of Frankenstein, commissioned by the Brighton Festival and Scottish Opera, and it will receive its premiere early in 2002.
