Tips for bicycle security

Tips for bicycle security

1.  Do not leave bikes in isolated places.

2.  Park your bike safely and considerately where it will not cause a danger or obstruction to others - particularly the elderly, people with disabilities or the very young.

3.  Always lock your bike when you leave it, even if only for a few minutes.

4.  Get a good bike lock (D locks or combination locks are best. Look for Sold Secure Ltd approved locks, or ask for a recommendation at a bike shop).

5.  Secure bikes to proper stands or robust street furniture.

6.  Lock bikes through the frame.

7.  Secure or remove wheels, take removable parts such as light fittings with you.

8.  Security mark your bike with an ultraviolet marker pen. The mark should include your home postcode and house number. Keep a photograph of the bike and a note of any other distinguishing features. These measures will help to identify the cycle if it is recovered at a later stage.

9.  Ask the police or your cycle dealer for a recorded cycle form which will put a full description of your bike on a database. Strathclyde Police Community Safety Department has developed the ‘Bicycle Passport’ which is also available from the Travel and Transport Co-ordinator.

10.  Insert a small business-like card into the handlebar tube with your name and address. This is a good form of identification.
