Business Travel Carbon Reporting 2018-23

On the bottom of this page you find the interactive Power BI file which allows comparison and interrogation of data on business travel, by college, school or other organisational units (such as University Services).

Please note -

  • The data contained is based on business travel bookings by air and rail for the full reporting years 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23.
  • All calculations are based on available data from the University Travel Agent. Any travel booked not through the Travel Agent is not included. 
  • The historical data from 2018-19 is the last full data set before the COVID pandemic demanded travel restrictions, which resulted in 2019-20 and 2020-21 data sets which show considerably decreased business travel bookings.

2. Baseline year 2018-19 and targets for each organisational unit

  • Select the School, College or Services in the top drop-down.
  • The page gives information on 2018-19 data on headcount, number of flights, distances travelled and relating carbon emissions.
  • The page also shows some carbon forecast calculations, under fixed assumptions on staff growth (+ 2% per annum), annual air travel carbon reductions (- 7.6%) to achieve the University's target, and that 100% of domestic travel would be taken by train or other ground transport, instead of flights.

3. Flight and rail overview

  • Select the School, College or Services in the top drop-down.
  • Select the reporting year or years you are interested in, in the right-hand side drop-down.
  • The page gives information on air and rail travel destinations, number of journeys, travelled distances and related carbon emissions by cabin class.

4. Detailed travel information

  • Select the School, College or Services in the top drop-down.
  • Select the reporting year or years you are interested in, in the right-hand side drop-down
  • You can select buttons to show values for carbon emissions, distances travelled, number of journeys and spend.
  • The results are shown by flight distance category and cabin class.
  • Reasons for travel are shown as a word-cloud.

  • If more than one year is selected, this page allows direct comparison between the values in each category over the reporting years, from 2018-19 onwards.

6. Data focussed on actual number of travellers

  • This page allows comparison between data based on headcount and number of actual travellers. 
  • You can select buttons to show values for carbon emissions, distances travelled, number of journeys and spend, in relation to actual number of travellers.

Note on changes to the structure of College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences from 2022-23

The College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences has changed its internal structure to create new schools. 

The Business Travel Reporting File reflects these changes as follows -

  • The new schools and units have been added to the old schools and institutes within the college reporting.
  • Data is shown in the old sections from 2018-19 up to 2021-22, leaving the new sections to show '0'.
  • Data is shown in the new sections from 2022-23 onwards, leaving the old sections to show '0'.
