Cochno Farm Tree Planting
The University of Glasgow led a significant tree planting scheme at the Cochno Farm Estate, reflecting our commitment to environmental stewardship. This project, completed at the end of 2023, encompassed approximately 11 hectares of new planting and 2 hectares of restocking, spread across 10 different planting areas. The team planted various species, including native broadleaves, including Scotch Pine, Silver Birch, Downy Birch, Rowan, English Oak, Sessile Oak, Hawthorn, Black Alder, and Goat Willow.
This initiative is a key component of our Biodiversity Action Plan, addressing the Climate Emergency outlined in our Climate Change Strategy: Glasgow Green. The tree planting, funded partly by a grant from Scottish Forestry, aligns with the larger ‘Clyde Climate Forest’ collaboration. This ambitious regional effort aims to plant 18 million trees in Glasgow City Region's urban and rural areas over the next ten years.
The University of Glasgow is dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of plant and animal life at our semi-natural and landscaped sites. We are enhancing habitats and thus biodiversity across our estate, acknowledging the value of the natural world and the benefits it provides, such as clean air, drinkable water, and fertile soils.
We also recognise the importance of green spaces for the wellbeing of our colleagues, students, and the local community. These initiatives are integral to our ongoing responsibility to protect and nurture our natural environment.
