Are you looking for ways to promote equality and foster an inclusive environment on campus? We are seeking new student representatives to join the Disability Equality Group and the Race Equality Group - sign up today!
The University of Glasgow's Disability Equality Group (DEG) and Race Equality Group (REG) play a vital role in promoting equality and fostering an inclusive environment on campus.
The Disability Equality Group is a forum to look for ways to improve the student experience, whilst the Race Equality Group focuses on implementing the ‘Understanding Racism and Transforming University Cultures’ report and action plan across the University.
Joining the Equality Group as a student offers a unique opportunity to directly influence the university's approach to equality issues. You can contribute to shaping policies, initiatives, and actions that aim to create a more inclusive and diverse campus environment. Your involvement can help ensure that the experiences and perspectives of students from diverse backgrounds are heard and considered in decision-making processes to improve the student experience.
We are seeking representation from undergraduate and postgraduate students. Please note, for continuity of membership, candidates should be planning to continue their studies at the University through to at least the end of the 2026-27 academic year.
Student representation is crucial in university governance for several reasons:
1. It ensures that student voices are heard at the highest levels of decision-making.
2. It promotes accountability and transparency in university policies and practices.
3. It helps develop important skills such as leadership, communication, and advocacy.
4. It contributes to a sense of community and belonging among students.
The Equality Groups meet twice a year, for approximately two hours for each meeting. Student representatives will be asked to represent the wider student community whilst serving on the Group. You will be asked to read the papers and comment on matters discussed by the group. These could range from commenting on the development of policies or following progress of ongoing work.
Membership of the Equality Group may be added to your Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR); however, this is dependent on your active participation.
To join the Disability Equality Group or Race Equality Group please send a brief email expressing your interest of why you wish to join and how you will contribute to the group, in no more than 250 words to the Equality and Diversity Unit equality@glasgow.ac.uk. Your perspective as a student is invaluable in shaping the university's approach to equality.
