A rendering showing the library with a new annex

In November 2024, work will begin on a £23 million investment project to upgrade the Annexe of the University Library.

The Annexe exterior will be fully renewed, with roof coverings and wall cladding replaced with modern materials that increase energy efficiency and meet current technical standards. Annexe study spaces will also be improved, with more natural light, upgraded ventilation, better heating and cooling facilities, and more access to power.

Benefits

  • Increased energy efficiency
  • Better insulation
  • Protection against roof leaks
  • More comfortable study spaces, with more natural light

What to expect

Work will begin in November 2024 and is expected to be completed in late 2026.  During this time, the project team will make every effort to mitigate disruption, but this is a substantial project and there will be some noise in and around the building while work is ongoing.

To help minimise noise and allow Library spaces around the works to be used as normal, temporary soundproof walls will be put up around some areas of the Annexe and some spaces may need to be temporarily closed. Any closures will be clearly signposted, and books stored in closed areas will remain available.

We are mindful of the rhythms of the academic year, particularly as we approach exam time, and the project teams will work closely with the SRC (Students’ Representative Council) to minimise disruption at key times for students.

Alternative study spaces

Quiet study spaces are also available in the McMillan Reading Room, Level 3 of the Fraser Building and the James McCune Smith Learning Hub, which offers a silent study area on Level 5. Find a space and check how busy each space is in the UofG Life app.

Keep up to date

Updates about the works will be shared on the Library webpages, and any disruption will be clearly signposted in the Library building.

If you have any questions about the project, please send an email to campus.development@glasgow.ac.uk, or speak to a member of our Reach Out team if you need any help on campus.

We really appreciate your patience while this necessary work takes place.
