Peer career support student sitting at a desk with another student helping them with career/job questions

Who We Are

The Peer Career Support Team has been active for almost two months now, assisting students with various career-related questions. We offer a range of services, including general CV reviews and reviews tailored to specific job postings. We help students look for jobs, whether for part-time roles or full-time positions after university, and we also offer support with interview preparation and any other career-related questions you might have.

We provide 20-minute drop-in appointments Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Level 2 of the Fraser Building so that students can get advice efficiently and from peers who can relate to their experiences. We are also rolling out online pre-booked appointments, so if you cannot make it to campus or 9-5 doesn’t suit your schedule, we can still help you.

My Favourite Part

My favourite part of being a Peer Career Supporter is meeting a diverse range of people and learning about different jobs and degree paths. The variety of jobs students are interested in has truly inspired me to think outside the box with my own career plans, showing me that

your degree doesn’t have to define you. From students interested in toy packaging design to those in heritage curation, we cover it all. While we don’t promise to have the exact answer to every career-related question, we do our best to help you find that answer—or refer you to someone who can.

What I Have Learned So Far

Having helped over 300 students as a team so far, my biggest takeaway is realising how many options are available to students. While we’re here to help fellow students, I feel I’ve also been learning from those who come in—especially on how to be more confident and challenge myself in my own career planning. I’m graduating next year, so I’m beginning to plan my next steps. Hearing stories from other students and graduates has shown me how transferable my degree is to nearly any job sector. The idea that you must choose a job directly related to your degree is simply not true, as demonstrated by students who studied linguistics and are now in event planning, or those who studied structural engineering and now run a dance school.

My Top 3 Tips Before Coming to the Peer Career Support Team

  1. Don’t be scared to come in with no idea of what you want to do, we are here to help you start your career thinking and signpost to relevant resources

  2. If you want a CV review, bring a copy with you either on your laptop, pen drive or a paper copy

  3. If you want to apply for a specific role or programme, have the link with you so we can search it up quickly and help you straight away

While the Peer Career Support Team is still in its infancy, we have all thoroughly enjoyed seeing you all in the Pod and at the Careers Events around campus and can’t wait to meet more of you soon.
