1. Introduction
Turnitin can assist staff in deterring and detecting plagiarism in student assignments and online examinations, though it must not be the sole measure - software will not pick up paraphrasing, use of artificial intelligence, or every source used and so some degree of manual checking still needs to be used. It is important to emphasise to students that there is no 'acceptable score' and that they should be aware that plagiarism may be detected in other ways.
The University's actions need backing from staff to help ensure that students know what plagiarism is and how they can avoid it. Staff also need to take action when they discover or suspect plagiarism in student work. These guidelines provide information and procedures which should help staff to tackle academic misconduct effectively.
