As part of the Technical Skills Demonstration Scheme Pilot we launched this year, a number of technical training sessions have now been confirmed. All technical staff regardless of their grade can apply to attend one or more of these sessions.

Sessions # 1, 2, 3 and 6

Demonstrator name

Matthew Trainer

Training location

Room 423, Level 4 Kelvin Building, Physics and Astronomy, Gilmorehill Campus

Topic

NMR and ESR

Summary

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is an important method of investigating molecular structures and interatomic bonding in crystalline and non-crystalline structures. NMR is based on the magnetic properties of the atom nucleus. It is very important in advanced medical imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) is an important method for the investigation of molecular and crystal structures. Using the apparatus, the properties of an organic compound DPPH are determined.

This session covers basic experimental techniques associated with NMR and ESR which demonstrates how these can lead to applications in the development of sophisticated medical imaging apparatus.
