The Institute of Infection, Immunity & Inflammation has received the S-lab silver certificate for sustainable laboratories having completed the LEAF sustainable lab assessment.
The IIIs Eco group were approached by Ellen Bird from GUEST (Glasgow University Environmental Sustainability Team) and asked if we would be willing to participate in a LEAF (Lab Efficiency Assessment Framework ) sustainable lab (S-Lab) assessment (I know that's a heck of a lot of acronyms to get your head around!).
We decided to apply the tool on a floor by floor basis so I took the lead for the level 3 Lab in the GBRC and worked through the process. To be fair a lot of the changes had already been made as part of the drive for more sustainable practices made by the IIIs Eco Group. We have just been notified that we have gained the silver award!!
We are the first lab in The University of Glasgow to participate and it is hoped that many more research and teaching labs will also take part.
This may be a different side to the sustainability part of the Technicians Commitment! So for the future of the planet, come on you TECHNICIANS, MAKE IT HAPPEN!
A big thank you to everyone at the III's trying to help us improve the sustainability of our labs every day!
