WSF 2030: School of Education and School of Social and Political Sciences
We are pleased to announce the launch of the School of Education and School of Social and Political Sciences Workspace Futures 2030 project, aimed at reimagining the Gilbert Scott Building workspaces.
This project is not just about physical relocation; it is about designing an environment that strengthens collaboration, innovation, and wellbeing, setting the stage for the move to the Gilbert Scott Building.
Where are we now?
This project will follow the RIBA Plan of Work which organises the briefing, designing, constructing and operating of a building into eight stages and explains the stage outcomes, core tasks and information exchanges required at each stage.
We are currently in RIBA Stage 1, Preparation and Briefing – this consultation phase presents a hive of activity to define the direction of the project. Our partners, Steelcase, have been guiding us through the Diagnose and Engage stages of this project, which aligns with RIBA Stages 0 and 1, as seen in the timeline above. We have now completed the Diagnose phase, and we are heading into RIBA Stage 2 (Concept Design).
You can find out more about the Workspace Futures 2030 Diagnose and Engage stages below.
Workspace Futures 2030 Diagnose & Engage Stages
The project began with the Diagnose stage, which involved a deep dive into our working culture, practices, and interactions with each other and our environment. Your participation, starting with data-gathering activities, shaped the outcomes of the workspace design. This included:
- Work Mode Study: This virtual calendar helps us map work modes and locations over five days, providing a clearer picture of our activity types and frequencies.
- Work Experience Survey: A concise survey designed to capture your current workplace experience, collaboration habits, and space usage preferences.
- Observations: A two-day observation study, conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the current work environment and uncover any hidden needs and requirements.
Following the data gathering stage, we began the Engage stage, where we explored the future work experience based on the project's Strategic Intent and the outcomes from the Diagnose stage, including:
- Co-creation Work Sessions: In-person sessions, during which we validated the data and insights gathered through our surveys, interviews, and workshops, and together design solutions.
- Exhibition: Exhibition of proposed design solutions.
