Chancellor of The University of Glasgow, Dame Katherine Grainger
Participating in a sports club can help you develop the skills employers look for. From internships to graduate posts or PhD applications, sport offers the ability to demonstrate key skills in the application process.

Being a member of a sport club committee gives you opportunities to develop leadership skills:
- Delegation
- Event organising
- Basic but fundamental administrative skills
I found that employers love students who have experience of working with others on a committee as nearly every workplace will have working groups that need agendas, minutes and reports.
GUSA President (23/24), Mario Killmann
Being the GUSA President has shaped me personally and set me up for life after university. Sport has been a fundamental part of my #TeamUofG experience and builds the foundation for my professional life.
Sport at the University of Glasgow developed my Graduate Attributes, including:
- Investigative Independent and Critical Thinkers
- Resourceful and Responsible
- Effective Communicators
- Confident Adaptable Experienced Collaborators
- Ethically and Socially Aware
- Reflective Learners

In the Student Development Survey 2023 from the Institute of Student Employers (ISE), employers reported that one of the shortfalls in skills that they had expected from graduates was time management.
Students with additional sport commitments within a busy academic timetable find that training and matches can improve their time management. Being in a sports club means you’re more likely to plan out your time out so that you can dedicate quality time to each part of your student life.
