First-aid provision and training
The University is required by Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 to provide appropriate equipment and facilities for giving first-aid to employees if they are injured or become ill at work. Security form the basis of this provision for our main campuses as many are trained in first-aid, they are easily recognisable and are on campus at all times. However, the nature and extent of the risks that arise on campus and elsewhere (e.g. on fieldtrips) must be considered when deciding what first-aid provision is needed within a School or Service.
As a minimum, low-risk workplaces such as a small office should have a first-aid box and a person appointed to make sure it is kept stocked. First aid boxes and contents can be bought via University approved suppliers.
Workplaces with greater risks are more likely to need one or more trained first-aiders. HSE provide advice on how to make a first aid needs assessment.
First Aiders
First aiders should be trained to HSE First Aid at Work standard and hold a recognised certificate of competence. The certificate is obtained by attending a 3-day training course and is valid for three years. It can be renewed by attending a 2-day refresher course before the certificate expiry date. SEPS provide both the 3-day qualification course and the 2-day refresher course. These are delivered by an external provider and are run on a cost recovery basis.
Security operate a first aider paging system using the "SafeZone" app and first aiders are encouraged to regsiter and take part in this system.
