Souvenir Booklet Publication - October 2008
A souvenir booklet celebrating the 60th Independence Anniversary of Pakistan's celebration was published for the cultural evening and dinner on 11th October. The booklet included messages of welcome from the High Commissioner for Pakistan to the UK, the Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, and the Chairperson of the Scottish Pakistani Association.
The booklet contained an article by the guest speaker from Pakistan, Yasmeen Lari, impressions by young students and scholars, and articles by Scottish contributors who have direct or indirect links with Pakistan.
Two Scottish historic links with Pakistan have been documented. One was on Major William Brown by his widow Mrs Margaret Brown. The other was on Colonel John Joseph Harper-Nelson by his grand daughter Mrs Fionna Eden-Bushell. Both Major Brown and Colonel Harper-Nelson played a major role in what is now Pakistan, and their contributions have been recognised. The booklet also contains views of Pakistani post-graduate students studying in Glasgow and how they compare the social, cultural and academic life-styles in Pakistan and Scotland. The students answer questions on whether they had positive or negative experiences while in Scotland, and what can they take back to Pakistan from their stay which will benefit their country? They identify a number of constructive ideas, such as an honest and hard working ethos, and conserving national heritage and culture.
The last section of the booklet includes impressions of Pakistan from University of Glasgow undergraduate students who visited Pakistan under the British Council 'Connecting Futures Programme'. These visits and dialogues gave the students an opportunity to remove misconceptions and further their knowledge about the people and country of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Students from both countries mutually benefited from the meetings and discussions, and developed long-term friendships and goodwill. It is hoped, therefore, that the souvenir booklet will be a source of inspiration to younger people, and to older members of both communities, and the booklet will be used for a wider dissemination to the community.
