International Women's Day Lecture - 2003
The International Women's Day 2003 lecture was given by a distinguished guest speaker, Dr Shaheen Sardar Ali (speaking in the photo on the left) of Warwick University. Dr Ali spoke eloquently about her experiences as Minister for Health, Population Welfare and Women Development in the Government of the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan, and as Chair, of the National Commission on the Status of Women, Pakistan.
Dr Ali described her role as Minister, and highlighted her responsibilities, which included designing and implementing a range of reforms and initiatives in the province. She contributed in restructuring the Department of Health, by merging male and female medical doctors' cadre to raise women's status and by promoting gender equality in the working environment. Dr Ali also quoted examples of remote communities in Pakistan, where female education is being encouraged, and she whole-heartedly supports such educational programmes.
The talk was extremely engaging and most informative, in particular to the members of the audience who were not as familiar with the actual role of women in Pakistan both in a domestic and professional capacity. |
