Background
The journey for researchers who choose to take their research-based innovation to commercialisation is challenging. This journey often involves a mix of new experiences that may include learning new ways of thinking, changing one’s mindset towards product development and manufacturing, working closely with entrepreneurs and executive talent, pitching to investors/corporates, and securing translational grants.
Navigating this journey requires university founders to dedicate significant time and effort. This effort is often so different to most of the founder’s academic colleagues that the opportunity to obtain peer support is limited.
RISE@UofG was initiated in recognition of the challenges involved in successful navigation of the commercialisation journey, and the lack of accessible peer support despite the availability of significant untapped talent of successful entrepreneurs within the University.
The purpose of the group is to leverage this untapped expertise to help founders at all stages of their journeys and to enhance the entrepreneurial activities in the University.
Mission
to utilise the existing successful entrepreneurs within the university to promote and enhance entrepreneurship across campus
Primary objectives
Advisory and consultation
The Management Committee will advise the University of the impact on entrepreneurship of proposed/actual policy changes and will promote positive measures to enhance entrepreneurship. It is expected that the University will utilise RISE@UofG as a consultative resource prior to developing policy that impacts entrepreneurship.
Peer-to-peer networking
RISE@UofG will platform an active on-line discussion forum open to staff, students, alumni, and investors for peer-to-peer discussions, Q&A, networking, problem solving, pitch advice, and access to investors.
Promotion of entrepreneurship
The Management Committee will evangelise and promote entrepreneurship among the university staff and student communities. It will also engage in external publicity and promotion of the University’s entrepreneurial activities.
Events
RISE@UofG will host regular engaging formal and informal hybrid events to provide information, learning, and networking opportunities for existing and aspiring founders.
Proposal selection
RISE@UofG will provide support to the University during selection processes targeting proposals with the highest probability of commercial success.
