Veterans Affairs (VA) / GI Bill Benefits
Veterans Affairs / GI Bill Benefits are eligible for use at the university for approved courses and eligible candidates. The VA education and training benefit or GI Bill benefits is a benefit that a US Veteran is in receipt of due to being a service member, or a family member could be in service and therefore benefits are eligible for to the spouse or dependents.
Programme Approval Process
The process of applying for use of Veterans Affairs benefits at the university is as follows:
- The student receives an offer from the University of Glasgow and wishes to use Veterans Affairs benefits. Details regarding Veteran Affair benefits and eligibility can be found here - About GI Bill Benefits.
- The student should ascertain if their course is on the pre-approved course list - VA Approved Courses April 2025. Please note that the 'exact' course & level has to be approved.
- The student should contact usloans@glasgow.ac.uk to advise that they wish to use Veterans Affairs benefits and provide their VA GI Bill elligibility paper. If the student's course is not on the pre-approved course list then they should include a link to the exact course from the university website to allow us to submit course approval on their behalf.
- Once the course has been approved, the student can be enrolled on the VA enrollment portal.
- Payment to the student for cost of living and tuition are paid each semester - subject to receiving a satisfactory progress form (SAP) from the student's advisor of studies. Disbursement dates for the year can be found here - Disbursement Dates.

What are the requirements for a course to be covered by Veterans Affairs benefits?
The course must be approved by the US Department of Veterans Affairs. The course also must have no overseas teaching, be 100% based on campus, have no distance/online education and not be joint with any other institution.

How long do Veterans Affairs course approvals take to go through?
The approval period used to take up to one year, however, in 2024 we were pleased approval turnaround took around 2-3 months - although we cannot guarantee this.

Can I start my course if it has not yet been approved yet?
Students can commence study prior to a course approval confirmation; however, we must advise that if the course is declined approval for any reason then the student must pay by other means i.e. federal or private loans.
