What is an eVisa?
An eVisa is an online record of your immigration status and the conditions of your permission to enter or stay in the UK. You will need to create a UKVI account to access your eVisa. Updating your physical document to an eVisa does not affect your immigration status or the conditions of your permission to enter or stay in the UK.
You can watch a video on what an eVisa is.
Which documents are being replaced by eVisas?
The following physical documents are being replaced with eVisas:
- Biometric Residence Permits (BRP)
- Biometric Residence Cards (BRC)
- Passport endorsements, such as indefinite leave to enter wet ink stamps
- Vignette stickers in passports, such as entry clearance or visa vignettes
Why do I need a UKVI account?
You need a UKVI account to access your eVisa and share information about your immigration status and conditions, such as your right to work or rent in the UK, using the view and prove service.
Do I need to pay to create a UKVI account?
Creating a UKVI account is free of charge.
How will I use my UKVI account?
With your UKVI account, you can:
- View details of your eVisa, such as your type of permission, expiration date, and conditions of stay.
- Update your personal information, such as contact details.
- Keep your passport or ID card details up to date.
- Share your immigration status with third parties (e.g., employers, landlords) using the view and prove service.
- Continue to carry your current passport when traveling.
How do I get an eVisa and a UKVI account?
If you have a biometric residence permit:
- If your BRP expires on 31 December 2024, create a UKVI account and access your eVisa before the expiry date.
- Use your travel document (passport) or visa application reference number to create your UKVI account if you have lost your BRP card.
If you have another physical document:
- For indefinite leave to enter or remain, apply for a BRP through a ‘no time limit’ (NTL) application to access your eVisa.
Please note that UKVI will stop issuing BRP cards from 31 October 2024. You will still need to apply for a ‘no time limit’ NTL application to obtain access to your eVisa.
If you have a biometric residence card (BRC):
- If granted status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you already have an eVisa. Continue to carry your BRC when traveling internationally.
- If not granted status under the EU Settlement Scheme, obtain immigration status as soon as possible.
If you are a British or Irish citizen with a passport or have the right of abode:
- No action is required for British or Irish citizens with passports. Continue to use your passport to prove your status in the UK.
- If you have the right of abode and still have your BRP, check the necessary steps after being granted citizenship.
Is there a deadline for registering for an eVisa?
You should set up your eVisa by 31 December 2024.
My BRP card expires before 31 December 2024, what should I do?
You should make a new visa application prior to the expiry date of your visa in the usual manner.Guidance will be provided by UKVI during the visa application process if you need to create a UKVI account.
Please remember that you should not travel outside of the UK if you have a pending UK visa application (e.g. extending or switching your visa).
My BRP Card expires on 31 December 2024, does that mean I will no longer have permission to be in the UK after this date?
If you have a BRP which expires 31 December 2024, but you are not sure when your overall permission to stay in the UK ends, you can:
- Check the original letter you received from UKVI telling you that your visa was successful
- Go to the Prove your right to work to an employer webpage to get a sharecode and view your immigration permission expiry date.
Can I travel outside of the UK and return after my BRP expires on 31 December 2024?
Yes, so long as your immigration permission is still valid after 31 December 2024. If you will travel outside of the UK after your BRP expires then ensure you have created a UKVI account and have linked your eVisa to your account before you return to the UK since the border agent may check this on arrival.
If you are not sure when your immigration permission expires, please check the original letter you received from UKVI telling you that your visa was successful and go to the Prove your right to work to an employer webpage to get a sharecode and view your immigration permission expiry date.
What if I need to make a new visa application?
Follow the usual application process for permission to stay in the UK. Guidance will be provided during the visa application process if you need to create a UKVI account. Please remember that you should not travel outside of the UK if you have a pending UK visa application (e.g. extending or switching your visa).
I don’t have a BRP or BRC card but an ink stamp or vignette/visa sticker in my passport, what should I do?
If you have an ink stamp in your passport such as for indefinite leave to enter or remain, apply for a BRP through a ‘no time limit’ (NTL) application to access your eVisa.
As part of the application process, you may need to travel to a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services Centre (known as a UKVCAS) to provide a photograph, and in some cases provide fingerprints. You'll be told how to book an appointment and upload your documents after you submit your application.
Please note that UKVI will stop issuing BRP cards from 31 October 2024. You will still need to apply for a ‘no time limit’ NTL application to obtain access to your eVisa. Further updates on this change will be available in due course.
Do my children need an eVisa?
Everyone must have their own UKVI account and eVisa. Where a child under the age of 18 is unable to create and manage their own account, a parent, guardian or responsible adult should do this for them. You can read more about creating a UKVI account for a child.
I need to travel internationally soon, what should I do?
- Set up your UKVI account and eVisa as soon as possible
- Make sure the document you travel on is registered to your UKVI account.
- Update your details if you plan to travel on a different document (for example a new passport).
- Ensure your personal details are up to date well in advance of travel. You may be delayed or denied boarding by carriers if your information is not correct.
- You’ll still need to carry your current passport with you.
- Continue to carry your BRP with you when you travel internationally until it expires
How do I travel with my eVisa?
You can watch a video on how to travel with your eVisa. Further information can be found on the Gov.uk website.

Do I need to contact the University’s People and Organisational Development (P&OD) team once I have accessed my eVisa?
Generally, you should always update the University of any changes to your working permission, such as a visa extension or switch to a new visa type or nationality, as we are required to keep your working permission details up to date on our system in line with UKVI Guidance. As part of this, we may be required to conduct a new Right to Work Check.
The Staff UKVI Compliance Team will be in touch directly with employees who require an updated online Right to Work check by 31 December 2024 to ensure compliance with the Home Office’s Right to Work check guidelines. This may be the case if your initial Right to Work check was conducted manually for example rather than the online Right to Work Check service.
