Managing Research Projects

This one-day workshop focuses on how to scope and manage a research project and understand the importance of the management of risks and relationships. It develops participants’ awareness of how to manage simple and complex projects; working with stakeholders; how to lead and manage diverse teams as a project manager / in a Principal Investigator role; and how to plan, monitor and evaluate project success.  Course participants should leave with a toolkit of project planning tools and techniques to equip them to lead successful research projects.

By the end of this workshop, you should:

  • have greater confidence with project management and working in project management environments (whether leading the project or participating) and be ready to apply your learning
  • have an appreciation of the factors that contribute to successful project delivery, including the requirements of various funders of research activity and understanding research project budgets
  • understand the core principles of project management as well as some of the main frameworks and tools associated with project management
  • understand how to scope, lead and manage successful research projects
  • have developed an understanding of how to effectively identify and manage risks within projects
  • understand the importance of effective colleague and stakeholder relationships in delivering successful projects
  • be aware of, and be able to apply, a range of tools and techniques to enable effective scoping, monitoring and management of research projects
  • be aware of the role of PI and Co-I when working with research staff

  • a Padlet sharing a range of online resources including links to open access texts on research project management, articles from research journals about the use of project management in research, links to specific links of the University of Glasgow Researcher Development Auditorium Blog, and links to resources raised by questions from participants during the workshop
  • access to an online leaning resource, which covers core elements of the research management process including elements on team management
  • access to templates to support the building of an effective research project management plan

Target Audience:

This workshop is suitable for Early Career Researchers and those with limited prior Project Management experience or training, who are leading or making significant contributions to research projects. The workshop is suitable for colleagues from both STEM and SHAPE disciplines.
