Learning, Teaching & Scholarship
The University of Glasgow has designed its Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PgCAP) to support our early career academics. As such, with the exception of those on a Research only track, it forms a key element of ECDP for the majority of participants. PgCap is mandatory for promotion to Grade 9 for all staff on LTS and R&T contracts. Full or partial exemption from PgCap may be available based on qualifications undertaken elsewhere; this should be clarified at the time of your appointment to Glasgow. If in any doubt, approach Academic and Digital Development (ADD) directly, keeping your line manager informed. Full details of the programme and how to apply are available on the ADD webpages.
Whilst studying for the PgCAP your teaching allocation may be reduced to ensure you have sufficient time to commit to your studies. The recommended teaching reduction for those undertaking PgCAP is 50% in year 1 and 25% year 2.
The ADD webpages also provide information regarding the recognition of prior learning, recognising that some colleagues may have substantial experience in teaching and supporting teaching or have studied in full or part for a similar qualification at another institution.
Finally for those who wish to take their studies further or explore some elements in more depth ADD also provide a range of other Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events and courses and you may wish to extend your formal studies to the MEd. in Academic Practice. Further details can be found on the ADD website.
