Joseph Sharples has been appointed as the Mackintosh Curator for The Hunterian.
The University is delighted to announce the appointment of Joseph Sharples as the Mackintosh Curator for The Hunterian.
Joseph joins The Hunterian from Historic Royal Palaces where he is currently a curator at the Tower of London. He has held research posts at the Universities of Liverpool and Aberdeen and was lead researcher on the acclaimed University of Glasgow project Mackintosh Architecture: Context, Making and Meaning.
He was previously Assistant Curator of Fine Art at National Museums Liverpool and has published articles and curated exhibitions on 19th and early 20th-century architecture. In 2017, he curated the opening exhibition at the new RIBA North gallery in Liverpool, comprising drawings and models for unrealised architectural projects in Liverpool.
The Hunterian at the University of Glasgow houses one of the world’s most important collections of the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) and his wife Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh (1864-1933). It is also home to the Mackintosh House, the reassembled interiors of their Glasgow home. Joseph returns to the University of Glasgow as we celebrate 150 years since Mackintosh’s birth.
Steph Scholten, Director of The Hunterian, said: "The Mackintosh collection is one of The Hunterian’s international top collections and the Mackintosh House is an important visitor attraction. It is therefore essential that we have a highly skilled and knowledgeable curator for these assets, such as Joseph Sharples. Joseph has proven through his work on the architecture of Mackintosh that he is the right person for the job."
It is expected that Joseph will take up post in July.
