The University of Glasgow is to host the Times Higher Education’s first global event dedicated to teaching excellence from 10 to 12 July 2018. The summit will explore the evolution of the teaching model, digital innovation in teaching, developing excellence through active learning, global variations in approaches to teaching and measuring learning gain.

It will also launch the first THE European Teaching Excellence Rankings.

Professor Frank Coton, Vice-Principal Academic & Educational Innovation at the University of Glasgow said:   “I am delighted that we are hosting this event.   It underlines the global significance of the University of Glasgow as a leading educational provider and, once again, restates our commitment to excellence in teaching and to the student experience as a whole.”

Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, spoke of the importance of the Summit against the backdrop of major campus development: “Our ambitious investment plan will enable even more of our inspiring people to come together within world-class facilities – large interdisciplinary research spaces that offer flexibility and stimulate collaboration, and modern student spaces that will combine study and social learning space with multi-styled and technology-enabled teaching.

“It will create a campus that we hope will inspire the next generation of world changers.”

Rachel Sandison, Director of Marketing, Recruitment & International added: “This will be a major global event that showcases the very best in higher education. I am thrilled that the University of Glasgow is hosting and look forward to welcoming all of our speakers and delegates to our beautiful campus next July.”

Phil Baty, editorial director of global rankings at THE, said: “I’m delighted that we will be dedicating three days to the evolution of teaching excellence in higher education. This is a field that is an absolute building block of modern society, and it constantly innovates, experiments, embraces technology and looks to the future.

“By bringing together university leaders, world-class thinkers, government policymakers, edtech innovators and investors all to the University of Glasgow, we can really set the agenda for what pedagogic excellence needs to resemble over the next couple of decades – and how it can be achieved.”

Confirmed speakers include Simon Bates, director of the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology at the University of British Columbia and chair of the educational innovation cluster of the Universitas 21 Global University Network, and Siân Bayne, assistant principal of digital education at the University of Edinburgh.

Shearer West, provost and deputy vice-chancellor of the University of Sheffield, who will become vice-chancellor of the University of Nottingham in October, will also speak at the event.
