Tributes have been paid to Dr Ron Thomson who died at the weekend aged 66. Ron, an engineering lecturer with the University of Glasgow, had only recently retired.

He is believed to have suffered an accident on Saturday evening while walking with his wife back to a friend's house in Argyll, where they had been staying.

Last night, the University issued a statement saying: “We are all deeply shocked and saddened by Dr Ron Thomson’s tragic and untimely death.  He took formal retirement at the end of January – less than two months ago – and had been looking forward to travelling.  As a lecturer in the mechanics of solids, he was known to generations of students.  His passion was educating the next generation of engineers and he leaves behind a significant legacy in that regard.”
