New Gender and Sexual Diversity Champion
Published: 15 August 2017
Professor Roibeard (‘Robby’) O Maolalaigh has been announced as new Gender and Sexual Diversity Champion.
The University of Glasgow is committed to promoting equality in all its activities and aims to provide a work, learning, research and teaching environment free from discrimination and unfair treatment, writes Mhairi Taylor, Equality and Diversity Manager.
To help achieve these objectives we have a team of Equality Champions, led by Professor Anton Muscatelli as our overall Equality Champion, all drawn from our Senior Management Team.
They each take responsibility for overseeing the support and provision for a particular protected characteristic, or range of characteristics. Although not protected characteristics, we are also delighted to have a Champion involved in activity around supporting refugees and asylum seekers.
The University of Glasgow values all its students, staff and visitors equally, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender reassignment status. We aim to create a work, learning, teaching and research environment in which all staff and students, whatever their sexuality, feel equally welcome and valued, and in which discriminatory behaviour is not tolerated, and our Equality Champions play a key role in achieving these aims.
We are therefore delighted to announce that, following the departure of David Newall, Professor Roibeard (‘Robby’) O Maolalaigh has taken up the role of Gender and Sexual Diversity Equality Champion.
This role covers a number of the Protected Characteristics, including Sexual Orientation, Gender Reassignment, Marriage and Civil Partnership. Supported by the Equality and Diversity Unit, Professor O Maolalaigh will chair the Gender and Sexual Diversity Group, which brings together student and staff representatives, and acts as a channel of communication where issues affecting LGBT+ people can be raised and addressed or referred to appropriate bodies for action.
Professor O Maolalaigh says of his new role: "I am delighted to be taking up the role of Gender and Sexual Diversity Champion and am looking forward to building on the excellent work already delivered in this area by my predecessor, David Newall, continuing to help facilitate an inclusive and supportive Campus for all our LGBT+ students and colleagues."
You can find more information on all our Equality Champions, and all our equality and diversity activities, on the Equality and Diversity Unit’s webpages.
