As we approach the start of the new semester we look forward to welcoming our students back to the University and to more activity returning to the campus. Over the summer we introduced a number of changes to the car parking arrangements and confirmed that the suspension of the standard University Parking Scheme will remain in place until 31 December.

In its place new arrangements have been devised to offer greater flexibility and confidence to staff returning to work.

The key drivers for this are:

  • Our desire to support staff in travelling to work safely
  • Many staff members working from home and only travelling to campus occasionally
  • Public health advice to avoid the use of public transport where possible
  • Changes in working hours potentially reducing public transport options.

Recognising the different demands and patterns of use across our various locations, the following arrangements will apply:

At Gilmorehill

All staff members living outwith a two-mile radius of the campus will be able to apply for a new ‘day permit’. The cost of these permits will be £1 per day (09:00 – 17:00), Monday to Friday. Parking outwith these times will continue to be free of charge and will not be subject to any permit. Operational staff whose working hours overlap slightly with either the start or finish time of the parking hours will not be required to purchase a permit but will need to register their vehicle with the Parking team (parking@glasgow.ac.uk).

Bookings can be made either on a daily basis or for a calendar month. Please see parking web pages for further details on the parking locations and to apply www.glasgow.ac.uk/parking

Please note that parking at Lilybank Gardens car park will NOT be available under the revised permit scheme for the remainder of this year. Anyone wishing to park there must use Glasgow City Council’s pay and display machines at their daily rates.

At Garscube

Students and staff members will be able to either reactivate their parking permit, enabling them to park each day, or apply for a new ‘day permit’.

At Tay House

Due to the restricted access to the main car parks for Tay House existing permit holders have been contacted separately to advise of the new arrangements.

Anyone who did not hold a permit may apply for the new daily permit which will be valid at car parks close to Tay House. Please see parking web pages for further details on the parking locations and to apply www.glasgow.ac.uk/parking

All locations

‘Blue Badge’ permit holders can continue to park on under the normal scheme’s terms and conditions.

All car parks will continue to be monitored on a daily basis and checks will be carried out on all vehicles parked in our parking facilities. If a space has not been booked via the online system and a vehicle is parked in one of the designated locations, then the owner may be served a parking charge notice.

We must continue to ensure that the campus and the other parking facilities are safe for pedestrians and other users so cars MUST be parked in marked parking bays.

Visitor parking will continue to be provided under the terms of the current scheme, with bookings payable online either by card payment or by budget code.

Please note that we are also considering steps to promote active travel options, including installation of more bicycle storage facilities on campus; in addition, I would draw your attention to the Cycle Plus  scheme - more information is available on the University website  https://www.gla.ac.uk/myglasgow/staff/benefits/benefitsplus/cycleplus/

Freshers' Festival

New temporary parking arrangements will be put in place for the Freshers’ Festival on the main campus from Monday, 14 September, to Wednesday, 16 September.

The Festival, which will open at 9.30am, will be held in the East and West Quads and the South Front of the Gilbert Scott Building.

This means that temporary parking restrictions are required to be put in place for health and safety reasons.

Anyone wishing to park in Professors’ Square or the South Front must arrive before 9am and leave after 4pm.  Alternative parking areas include Southpark House, the back of Great George Street and the parking area outside the Davidson Building which will allow cars to exit via Botany Gate.

No deliveries will be permitted on campus during these three days (14-16 September) and, if urgent, members of staff should call Security on x4282 to arrange a delivery time either outwith these hours or for deliveries to be made and stored at an alternative building.
