Award recognises UofG support for student carers
The University was formally awarded the Carers Trust Scotland Going Higher Award in a virtual ceremony on 28 October.
The award was accepted on behalf of UofG by Dr Neil Croll, Head of Widening Participation, and Monika Anderson, Widening Participation Officer and one of the named points of contact for student carers at the University.
The award recognises universities which support student carers throughout their education to ensure they maintain good health, complete their course and achieve the best grades possible.
The application for the award was compiled by a cross-university working group headed by Neil, with representatives from Widening Participation, Student Services, advisors of studies, the Students’ Representative Council and student carers.
The award provided the opportunity to recognise the support that UofG has offered student carers since 2011, when the University launched its Student Carers’ Policy, originally written by the Students’ Representative Council - the first in Scotland to do so. It also allowed the University to identify key areas of good practice and expand our support, including the introduction of adjusted entry requirements for carers.
“The award means a great deal to the University,” says Neil. “We are extremely proud of the contribution that student carers make to the University of Glasgow and are committed to supporting our student carers throughout their studies.”
