Previously Assistant Vice-Principal, Learning and Teaching, Professor Fischbacher-Smith takes over the role held by Professor Frank Coton, who has moved to become Vice-Principal (Academic Planning and Technological Innovation).

She said: “I’m delighted to have been appointed as Vice-Principal, Learning and Teaching. There are a number of developments in learning and teaching at the University that offer the potential to really enhance student learning, and to support staff involved in teaching. These include the completion of the James McCune Smith Learning Hub, the commitment to transforming our approach to assessment and feedback, and the evolution of our teaching practices.

“I’m very much looking forward to continuing to work with the student, academic and professional services communities to realise the potential of these initiatives and to develop the next stage of our learning and teaching strategy.”

In his role as Vice-Principal (Academic Planning and Technological Innovation), Professor Coton will provide leadership of the planning and budgeting process for the University. He will also lead on institutional resource planning in support of the University’s strategic vision; and provide effective oversight and leadership of the development, implementation and governance of the University strategy in relation to IT and digital technologies, working collaboratively with the Executive Director of Information Services and the Director of IT Services.
Professor Coton will also lead the introduction of processes and policies associated with academic career development, working collaboratively with the Executive Director of Human Resources, and more generally, providing academic leadership of relevant aspects of organisational development.

The Principal, Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, said: “I am delighted to welcome Professor Moira Fischbacher-Smith to her new role in the Senior Management Group and look forward to working closely with her as the University enhances student learning and supports staff involved in teaching. I also look forward to working closely with Professor Coton in his new role which will be pivotal in the University’s development as a global top-100 university.”
