Thomas Sutherland, the Scots born academic held as a hostage in Lebanon, has died at the age of eighty-five.

Professor Sutherland was born in Falkirk and studied at the University of Glasgow before moving to the United States. He graduated with a BSc in Agriculture in 1953.

He was working in Beirut when he was abducted by a group of gunmen, in nineteen eighty five. He was held captive for more than six years.
