Updated Wednesday 8 July

We are getting to the stage when the district heating scheme trench works will begin to move away from the main campus, and start to affect the north side of University Avenue and Gibson Street.

From Tuesday 7 July drivers will be able to come in via the Main Gate for access to Professor Square and the South Front. Exit will be via the North Front and down the slip road to the Pearce Lodge.

Engineering Way will be blocked for concrete operations as part of the reinstatement work.

Although the Dumbarton Road gate is open, the work by the Davidson building still means no through road to the South Front.  A traffic management scheme is also now in operation on University Avenue, just down hill from the Main Gate towards the Pearce Lodge.

The faulty gate on the Wolfson Medical School building car park is now back in working order.

Here are the updates for all the current trench works on the Gilmorehill Campus. You can also refer to the Big Picture map.

Trench / LocationDetails (see Big Picture Map)
Trench D – James Watt Building Engineering Way has been largely reinstated to within about 30 metres from Pearce Lodge. Through access and parking is being restored. Excavation works will continue through the Pearce Lodge gate as the district heating scheme is extended out on to University Way. Start date is TBC.
Trench F - Davidson building Trench F - Phase w works have started outside the Davidson building and are expected to be completed by mid July.
Trench B – University Place On University Place, pipework installation has started and the excavations continue.  Progress has been slowed slightly by some of the existing network of pipes emerging from the Botany Gate.
Trench G Work is underway on Southpark Avenue and these works are progressing well down towards University Avenue.  Crown House did not take full possession of the road to allow access to Wellington Church. The area of work has been expanding slightly and there will be no vehicle access to the church until the works are complete.  Pedestrian access is being maintained.
Trench J This is the area from the Pearce Lodge up past the James Watt North building and the Thomson building. In an effort to protect tree roots, trenching for a new high-voltage cable route will be cut up the hill towards the North Front. Parking is being suspended on that stretch of roadway.

Weekend parking at the Medical School underground car park

Access to the underground car park at the Wolfson Medical School will be unavailable on Saturday 11 July and Sunday 12 July. This is due to work unrelated to the District Heating Scheme. Access will be reinstated on Sunday evening. The car park will also be closed on Saturday 18 July with plans to reopen it on Sunday 19 July.

Background

The District Heating Scheme project is going to involve laying in the region of five and a half kilometres of new pipework across the University campus (both sides of University Avenue) over the next seven months or so.

This is to replace the old system, which was more than fifty years old. In some cases, the new network will also help facilitate high voltage and IT cables to improve campus services.

To view the entire extent of the district heating scheme, and the different phases of work, see the Big Picture Map
