Professor Rhian Touyz, Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences, has received three awards from the British Heart Foundation to start on 1 April 2013 for five years. They are a personal chair, an infrastructure award and a programme grant which total almost £3 million.
Rhian's programme grant is called 'Vascular Nox5 and hypertension: molecular mechanisms and therapeutic implications'. Hypertension is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the UK with the prediction that its prevalence will increase globally by 60% over the next 20 years, becoming a large-scale health, societal and economic burden.
A better understanding of underlying mechanisms is paramount for early detection and development of improved and targeted strategies to prevent and/or ameliorate hypertension and its complications, such as heart failure, stroke, kidney failure and vascular dementia.
