Over the summer, a number of appointments were made across campus. 

Dr Fraser MacBride – Chair of Logic and Rhetoric

Dr Fraser MacBride has been appointed to the Chair of Logic and Rhetoric. The Chair of Logic and Rhetoric has been established in the University since 1727.  It was the first University of Glasgow Chair held by philosopher and economist Adam Smith.  Dr McBride is currently the Fellow and Director of Studies in Philosophy at Trinity Hall, Cambridge.   He is a graduate of the Universities of Cambridge and London.   Dr MacBride is a metaphysician who has won the Philip Leverhulme prize for his work in the field.  He is liberating our understanding of metaphysics be re-engagement with the great Edwardian and Georgian philosophers.

Professor Jan Stenger – MacDowell Chair of Greek

Professor Jan Stenger has been appointed to the MacDowell Chair of Greek.  The MacDowell Chair is the Chair of Greek that has been established in the University since 1709.  It received the largest single individual bequest given to the University and was re-named for the benefactor, Professor MacDowell.  Professor Stenger is currently Professor at the Free University of Berlin.  He is a graduate of the Universities of Tübingen and Kiel.  His work encompasses both the Archaic period and the late antique, especially the city of Antioch in Syria.

Professor Faisal Ahmed - Samson Gemmell Chair of Child Health

Professor Faisal Ahmed was appointed the Samson Gemmell Chair of Child Health in the School of Medicine on August 1, 2012.  Prior to this he was an Honorary Professor of Developmental Endocrinology at the University of Glasgow.  Since 2007 he has also been the paediatric lead for R&D for Greater Glasgow & Clyde Health Board and was instrumental in the development of a children’s clinical research facility at Yorkhill.  Professor Ahmed is internationally renowned for his research and clinical practice in the fields of disorders of sex development (DSD) and the effects of chronic disease on skeletal development.

Professor Christoph Kayser – Chair in Integrative Neuroscience

Professor Christoph Kayser has been appointed Chair of Integrative Neuroscience within the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology.  A graduate of ETH Zurich, Professor Kayser joined the College on August 1, 2012 from the Max Planck Institute for Cybernetics. His research aims to understand the underlying principles of sensory information processing, focussing on the processing of auditory information in the temporal cortex and how this benefits from multisensory information.
