The lights illuminating the iconic tower of the University of Glasgow will be switched off to give star-gazers a clearer view of the night sky on Wednesday, January 18.

The Glasgow landmark will be plunged into darkness as it plays host to an astronomy observing event as part of BBC2’s Stargazing Live programme, to be broadcast on January 16, 17 and 18.

The event will be hosted by Dr Martin Hendry, from the School of Physics & Astronomy, with help from the Astronomical Society of Glasgow and there will be a range of telescopes for people to look through and experts on hand to answer any questions.

Should the weather be inclement, some public talks will be held in Room G255  (Humanities Lecture Theatre) in the main building instead. The whole event will be filmed by Glasgow University Student Television (GUST) and streamed live online.

The Stargazing Live event will take place from 7.30pm to 9:30pm at the South Front (under the tower). More details are available from Dr Hendry on 0141 330 5685, or via email:  Martin.Hendry@glasgow.ac.uk.
