Using Databases

Discipline specific or multidisciplinary academic databases offer access to the literature of a particular discipline or across a range of disciplines (e.g. across the social sciences), not just what the UofG Library subscribes to! These databases mostly provide access to academic journal articles. Databases differ from search engines (like Library Search or Google Scholar) by offering more options for focussed searching (they index more parts of a record e.g. tables and images in an article) You can save and rerun searches as well as set up alerts.

Subject Specific Databases for Education

The UofG Library subscribes to hundreds of databases & can be accessed from the library's databases by subject webpage. If you click on the Education link you will see the Education subject specific databases. One database doesn’t hold *every single document* existing  - but it will provide you with access to a substantive body of literature in your subject area.

Which database (s) you use depends on what information you need and how comprehensive your search of the literature needs to be! The list below highlights a number of the most heavily used databases for Education

Multi or Interdisciplinary Databases

There are also a few multi or inter-disciplinary database platforms which provide access to literature from across the wide-range subject areas in the Social Sciences

  • ProQuest Academic. The Social Sciences suite on this platform contains a number of useful individual databases, including Applied Social Sciences Index and the International Bibliography of the Social Sciences
  • JSTOR. Provides full-text online access to selected scholarly journals in the fields of social sciences including, economics, political science, demography etc.  Click on the Advanced Search option on the JSTOR homepage to narrow to Social Sciences subjects.
  • Web of Science - Core Collection .  Provides access to over 12,000 of the highest impact journals worldwide, including Open Access journals and over 150,000 conference proceedings. You'll find current and retrospective coverage in the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities dating back to 1900.  Click on More Setting tab on the Web of Science - Core Collection homepage and narrow to Social Science Citation Index only.
