If you are on student placement in a school you may find getting to the Library difficult. The Library has fantastic online collections of Education ebooks and journal articles available in full-text. If you would like to search across all of our collections (print and online) you can still use the standard version of Library Search

This material is available to stream online.
Children's Literature Collection
The children’s literature collection is located on Level 4 of the Library. It is not a comprehensive collection of children’s fiction – in general, public libraries will have larger and more varied collections. The collection comprises novels, short stories, and picture books for pre-school, primary and secondary reading & includes contemporary and classic works. The collection is designed to support the work of student teachers on school placement. It therefore reflects those authors and themes which are, or have been, popular in Scottish schools. The collection also includes most of the prize-winning books from the various children's book prizes, such as the Scottish Book Trust, Waterstones Children's Books of the Year and the Carnegie Medal that annually recognizes one outstanding new book for children or young adults.
The collection includes a historical section which includes with fiction, non-fiction and school textbooks. The children’s fiction & non fiction historical collection comprises items from the middle of the nineteen century up to the nineteen thirties. It includes examples of all the popular contemporary genres, such as school stories, stories with a strong religious/moral element, and adventure stories. It also contains examples of some of the most popular magazines of the time such as “Chums” and the “Girls Own Annual”. Additional interest is provided by the many colour plates and illustrations within these items, and by the fact that a number of them were “presentation copies”, i.e. prizes for school work or Sunday school attendance etc, and still have the original certificates pasted in. The School textbooks collection daties approximately from the period of the 1872 Education Act to the 1965 Primary Memorandum.
The Library also holds the Blackie & Son Archive of children’s textbooks published between 1882 and 1976 by the Blackie & Son publishing house. Blackie & Son produced both fiction and non-fiction educational books for children and was operational from 1806 until 1991, with premises in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London, and later India and Canada. For more information on the Blackie Archive see the three Library blogposts on the collection.

Internet sites
In addition to the resources mentioned above, students may well find it worthwhile to explore the wide range of teaching resources available on the internet. There are a great many internet sites produced by and for teachers, too many to list here, but the following are some of the best:
- Learn at BBC Scotland website - excellent source of material for use in schools with the emphasis on Scotland
- Education Scotland National Improvement Hub - articles or exemplars on improving outcomes for learners
- Educator's Reference Desk: wide-ranging website with a sub directory of lesson plans
- Library of Congress - teacher's site, focusing on the use of primary sources. US bias, but useful nevertheless.
- New York Times Learning Network: an online current and special events news site, containing an archive of lesson plans.
- Primary Resources: free lesson plans, activity ideas and resources for primary teachers
- Schoolzone: links to useful websites, searchable by subject.
- Teaching Ideas for Primary Teachers: lesson ideas, activities and resources organised according to subject.
