In November 2024, work will begin on a £23 million investment project to upgrade the Annexe of the University Library.
The Annexe exterior will be fully renewed, with roof coverings and wall cladding replaced with modern materials that increase energy efficiency and meet current technical standards. This will bring the Annexe exterior up to the same standard as the rest of the Library, which was re-clad in 2012. The Annexe study spaces will also be improved, with upgraded ventilation, heating and cooling facilities, and more access to power.
Benefits
- Increased energy efficiency
- Better insulation
- Improved fire safety
- Protection against roof leaks
- More comfortable study spaces, with more natural light
Susan Ashworth, Executive Director of Information Services, said “this is an exciting project which will make a substantial difference to the look and feel of the Library Annexe, both inside and outside. We appreciate that there will be an impact on students and colleagues while the work is ongoing, and we will work closely with the upgrade team to mitigate any disruption".
What to expect
Work will begin in November 2024 and is expected to be completed in late 2026. During this time, the project team will make every effort to mitigate disruption, but this is a substantial project and there will be some noise in and around the building while work is ongoing.
To help minimise noise and allow Library spaces around the works to be used as normal, temporary soundproof walls will be put up around some areas of the Annexe and some spaces may need to be temporarily closed. Any closures will be clearly signposted, and books stored in closed areas will remain available.
The team will also take care to mitigate any impact on areas around the Library. We will work with colleagues based in impacted areas to keep you informed and manage any disruption.
There will be notices in the Library to warn of any disruption, and updates will be posted to the Library webpages.
