French Honours Option
|
|
Selected pages from the 1613 edition of Pierre de Lancre's Tableau de l'inconstance des mauvais anges et demons are presented here. This book is one of the core texts of the French Honours option on Stagecraft and Witchcraft and is crucial to understanding the historical context of the great witchcraft persecutions of the early modern period. Published in Paris by Nicolas Buon, this book followed
an earlier edition of 1612, but is described as being 'reveu,
corrigé, & augmenté
de plusieurs nouvelles observations, arrests, & autres choses
notables'. Although copies of a modern edition of the work are
available for loan (Level
6 Main Lib Anthrop K495 LANCR & Level 2 Short Loan Anthrop K495
LANCR), this modern edition lacks all the classical and
mythological references incuded in the original and fails to reprint
its plate; furthermore, examination of one of the original copies gives an extra
dimension to understanding the seventeenth century mindset. Students might also find the Humbul Humanities Hub Renaissance of Witchcraft Studies web page useful for finding further resources in this area. |
