The wealth of Glasgow was founded on trade and industry and there is a famous saying, `the Clyde made Glasgow - but Glasgow made the Clyde'. In the eighteenth century the river was quite shallow but dredging and development of the riverbanks enabled ships to travel further into the city. The consequent growth in shipbuilding and related businesses on the riverside made Glasgow one of the world's greatest industrial and commercial centres.
