University of Glasgow Library Disability Policy

University of Glasgow Library wishes to support all disabled individuals to participate as fully as possible and to enjoy a quality experience while studying, working or visiting the Library. Our aim is to provide an environment where there is equality of opportunity and where disabled people have equal access to our services and collections. This applies to our Main University Library and the Branch Libraries.

All library users are covered by this policy but we regret that, due to licensing regulations, computing facilities and electronic resources are available only to staff and students of the University.

The Library’s disability policy is informed by the Equality Act 2010 and supports the University's Equality and Diversity Policy.

The Library works closely with and is advised by the University Disability Service.

The Library has a Disability Co-ordinator who acts as a first point of contact for Library users with disabilities, email library-disability@glasgow.ac.uk.

The Library is accessible via the main entrance (Level 2) direct from street level. Once inside lifts serve all other areas of the building. We aim to make all Library services and facilities accessible to all.

You are welcome to bring in a helper or a dog.

All our frontline staff receive equality and diversity training and will be able to respond to the needs of disabled readers wherever and whenever possible.

We provide a range of services for our disabled readers. Some of these services are: longer loan periods, a fetching service and proxy borrowing. A full range of our services can be viewed in the Information for section of the Library website

There are fire refuge points in the lobby areas next to the stairwells on Levels 4 – 12. Levels 2 and 3 have fire exits at ground level. If you are studying on the upper levels of the building and depend on the lifts to get around or have visual impairment, please make your way to the nearest Refuge Point when the fire alarm is activated. Each Refuge has a phone - use it to contact Security staff and let them know where you are. They will make sure someone comes to help you as soon as possible.

All Library information leaflets can be provided in a variety of formats on request.

Our website has been designed to be as accessible as possible and we follow best practice guidelines, such as the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and PAS 78 (British Standards Institute guidance on website accessibility).

The Library will take into consideration the needs of all its users when carrying out developments of its buildings or services.

We will endeavor to support your needs and make reasonable adjustment wherever possible. Advance notice of any support needs would be most helpful.
