A new role has been created at the University dedicated to LGBTQ+ history which is being carried out by Dr Sam Rutherford. Join us for the opportunity to hear from Sam to learn a bit about the role, Sam's research interests, and how history through a queer lens can be approached. Staff Survey - LGBTQ+ Feedback

In this online session find out what LGBTQ+ staff contributions to the Colleague Engagement Survey indicated. EDI Policy Adviser Nighet Riaz will present a summary overview and then there will be a chance to discuss, ask any questions and share suggestions on how to improve the University for LGBTQ+ colleagues.

We're pleased to be screening this documentary by Victoria McKenzie exploring the extraordinary story of the Black Lesbian and Gay Centre in London (1981-1999).

Synopsis:

40 years ago a group of activists came together with one aim: to open a centre for the black LGBTQ+ community. Against the backdrop of 1980s politics, the rise of Thatcher ism, and the AIDS epidemic, they started on the path. Drawing on archival materials Under Your Nose is a feature documentary dedicated to those trailblazers who facing hostility, and often personal danger offered hope and a lifeline to many others. Their legacy is still apparent today.

The LGBTQ+ Staff Network is collaborating again with University of Glasgow Sport to offer fitness classes in May 2023 and June 2023!

We offered several online Zoom workouts in 2021. This year all classes will be on campus in the Stevenson Building. Full access to the gym and pool is included before/after the fitness class!

We want to create a safe and respectful place for all participants, so these classes are exclusively for the LGBTQ+ Network members, and we have made sure the instructors have completed equality and inclusion training.

Workout centred around the use of suspended training harnesses to target strength in the core!

Yoga
When: 18 May @ 15.00
Focus: Strength/Flexibility
Duration: 60 mins

Improve and challenge your flexibility, strength, balance along with improving your posture whilst releasing tension and using breath to calm the body and mind. A yoga mat would be beneficial for the floor yoga exercises but don't worry if you don't have one!

Black History Month
Tour of the Zanele Muholi Exhibition

We are pleased to offer an in person private tour for the LGBTQ+ Staff Network of the Zanele Muholi exhibition hosted by the Hunterian, along with Street Level Photoworks and Belfast Photo Festival. 

Zanele Muholi is one of the most acclaimed artists working today, their self-proclaimed mission "to re-write a black queer and trans visual history of South Africa for the world to know of our resistance and existence at the height of hate crimes in South Africa and beyond."

Zandra Yeaman, Hunterian Curator of Discomfort, will be guiding us.

Meet the Scottish Bi+ Network

Community Heritage Officer, Francis Osis, will be joining us to share more about Waverley Care's current oral history project. Through a mixture of interviews and archive research, an understanding of HIV/AIDs in the community is being created, which places those communities at its heart.

We're very pleased to be welcoming Ruth Ramsden-Karelse, a PhD researcher based at the University of Oxford to share her work with us this LGBTQ+ History Month. Ruth will be presenting from her DPhil thesis, in which she argues that an archival resource depicting a queer of colour community in apartheid South Africa represents a politically and culturally important theory-practice of worldmaking.
