Saeko Yazaki shares an update on a new resource, following an LTDF funded project in 2024.
The following is a description from Saeko Yazaki about a new resource, following an LTDF funded project in 2024.
To help foster an inclusive and accessible learning environment for all students at the University of Glasgow, we have developed new PowerPoint Accessibility Guidance and Teaching Inclusion Guidelines. These are designed to help staff create and deliver teaching materials that align with the Equality Act 2010 and Digital Accessibility Regulations 2018. By prioritising accessibility, we not only meet legal requirements but also enhance the learning experience for all students, not just those with disabilities.
This initiative was made possible through the Learning and Teaching Development Fund, which supported the employment of an intern and the formation of a student focus group. In collaboration with four students and nineteen colleagues from various university departments, including the Equality and Diversity Unit, Disability Service, Learning Innovation Support Unit, Academic and Digital Development, and Digital Accessibility— we have developed a suite of resources to support inclusive teaching:
- Accessibility Guidance Presentation (PowerPoint)
- Three types of accessible PowerPoint templates
- PowerPoint Accessibility Checklist (Word)
- Teaching Inclusion Guidelines
All materials are available for download on the Digital Accessibility website.
Getting Started with Accessible Presentations
To create an accessible PowerPoint presentation, we recommend starting with the Accessible Guidance Presentation. This resource highlights common accessibility challenges and suggests easy-to-implement solutions, such as:
- Improving colour contrast (one of the top three accessibility issues at UofG)
- Selecting appropriate fonts
- Including slide titles and numbers (see Slides 11-15 of the Guidance Presentation)
Additionally, the Teaching Inclusion Guidelines offer insights on fostering an inclusive teaching approach, focusing on broader pedagogical strategies rather than specific compliance measures.
All resources are aligned with the University of Glasgow’s Equality & Diversity and Accessible & Inclusive Learning policies, ensuring our commitment to an inclusive educational experience for everyone. We encourage all teaching staff to explore these resources and integrate accessibility best practices into their teaching materials. Together, we can create a more inclusive and effective learning environment for all students.
