Literary commentary/close reading: Students are asked to close read one of the texts studied in the course in connection to one of the theories of identity that we explore together. To do this close reading they are asked to focus their attention on the significance and features of a maximum of 5 continuous sentences from the chosen text. Literary analysis by GenAI is ineffective when introducing limiting conditions of the kind introduced by this exercise. Their inability to understand the data they are fed or what they write makes them struggle when asked to make choices that are unusual or not present in the texts with which they are trained.
