MyDevice laptop setup
To set up and access the required services on your new UofG Laptop, there are several steps you need to follow. This process should take around 30 minutes.
Start the set up and configuration
1. Power on your laptop (connect to mains power) and wait until the set up page is displayed.
2. Choose your Region and Language setting, followed by preferred Keyboard layout. If you are prompted to add additional keyboard layouts and don't require this, select the Skip button.
3. Connect to network or Wi-Fi (this cannot be a mobile phone hotspot). Select the Wi-Fi network you want to join and enter your credentials and password required. If you are using the University's eduroam network, login using your UofG email address and password.
4. At the Welcome to University of Glasgow screen enter your UofG email address and password and click Next.
5. When the MFA (multi-factor authentication) prompt appears, validate with an appropriate method such as the authenticator app or entering the code received by text.
6. The device will now run through the setup procedure. Once all steps are complete it will reboot and you will be able to login using your University email address and password.
Updates and restart
7. After logging into your Wi-Fi, the laptop will check for updates to the operating system. This may take a few minutes and a screen similar to this will be shown.
- The laptop may reboot during this part, this is normal. Do not switch it off, shut the lid or let it run out of power during this setup.
Setting up your user account
8. At the Welcome to University of Glasgow screen enter your UofG email address and password and click Next.
9. When the MFA (multi-factor authentication) prompt appears, validate with an appropriate method such as the authenticator app or entering the code received by text.
10. After authentication, the device will now run through the setup procedure and can take up to 10 to15 minutes. Once all steps are complete it will restart and you should see the windows log in screen.
11. Log in again, using your UofG email address and password to complete the set up procedure. You may be prompted to validate using MFA again.
- The final set up procedure will run. This may take a few minutes and once completed, the desktop will be displayed. Do not switch the laptop off, shut the lid or let it run out of power during this set up.
12. On the Windows 11 desktop, you may see a dialog box called BitLocker Drive Encryption. Select Close, the laptop will complete this process in the background when you next restart your computer.
- BitLocker encrypts the hard disk so that the data cannot be read without authorisation.
Your new desktop and final steps
When you log in for the first time, OneDrive will begin pulling files from the cloud. This means that anything you had on another UofG device that also ran OneDrive on will begin to appear on the desktop.
- This may take several minutes so let it update all your files to the local hard drive, where they will be synchronised with the cloud
Add Windows Hello pin
Once all Windows updates have been applied to your laptop, you may be asked if you wish to have a pin code to open your device.
Adding a pin code is a shortcut way to log in and quicker than entering your UofG email address and password. If you want to set this up:
- When prompted, select OK
- The device will send a request for you to validate using MFA
- Once authenticated, you will be asked to set up a pin
- Enter the pin twice to confirm and then hit OK
You'll be able to log in using the pin you set up, and if you are required to access an admin procedure use the pin for this also.
Your laptop is now ready for use
- You should have all your data in OneDrive available and it will synchronise changes made to files on the device with the cloud storage location
- Microsoft Office applications will be installed and you will see them on the Start menu
- When you open Outlook, your emails will begin to populate your inbox
