| Provenance: | Jean/Johan Ferreulx (1557-1620), physician, born in Burgundia and came to Antwerp after 1585; in 1620 bequeathed his library of over 1,000 volumes to a proposed Collegium Medicum in Antwerp. For a discussion of this, Ferreulx’s copy of Valascus, see C. Broeckx, ‘Notice sur un livre de médicine prétenduement imprimé en 1401’, "Extrait des Annales de l’Académie d’Archéologie de Belgique" (Anvers: Buschmann, 1847). When Broeckx examined this copy there was an inscription on the rear pastedown ‘in usum doctoris Ferreux 15 ass. 1618’. That pastedown is now lost. Antwerp, Collegium Medicum Antverpiense (formally founded 1659): ‘Ex Bibliotheca Medica Antuerp.’ on [*]1r; library sold in 1805. For information on this and the preceding provenance, thanks are due to Dr Steven Van Impe, curator at the Hendrick Conscience Heritage Library, Antwerp. Jan Kornelis Stappaerts (1749-1812), physician, Antwerp: according to Broeck ('Notice', p. 21), the contents of the Bibliotheca Medica were purchased by Stappaerts in 1805. James Tregaskis (1850-1926), bookseller, London: sold book to John Ferguson; printed catalogue extract mounted on front flyleaf, item 425, price obliterated – probably from a Tregaskis catalogue. John Ferguson (1837-1916), Professor of Chemistry, University of Glasgow: purchased from Tregaskis; pencil acquisition date on front pastedown “John Ferguson Dec. 6 1895” on front flyleaf and Ferguson’s pencil note of his supplier on rear flyleaf “Tregaskis”. | Binding: | Low Countries(?), 16th-century blind-tooled calf over bevelled oak boards; covers decorated with intersecting triple fillets to form a centre panel surrounded by two frames; the centre panel is divided by triple fillets into lozenge and triangular-shaped compartments within each of which is a separate pineapple stamp; the inner frame is formed by a foliate roll; the outer frame is undecorated; evidence from strap recesses on rear board that book originally had two clasps (both now lost); boards re-covered in goatskin and remains of original covers feathered on; original spine lost; volume restored by Anthony Gardner, Sept. 1967 (binder’s note on rear endpaper).
