Giacomo Manzoni (1816-1889), Count, minister of finance, Roman Republic, 1849:  buff-coloured book label lettered “Ex libris Jacobj Manzoni” with crest on front pastedown;  Manzoni sale lot number “3726” written in red ink and in pencil on front pastedown - see 'Catalogue de la bibliothèque de feu M. le comte Jacques Manzoni' (part II, 1893).
John Ferguson (1837-1916), Professor of Chemistry, University of Glasgow:  Ferguson’s acquisition note in pencil on rear pastedown “Manzoni sale 3726 per J. MacLehose”;  his note in pencil on front pastedown “John Ferguson June 20 1893 First edition 1499 Sunderland copy I got in 1883 This is the Manzoni copy”.
James J. MacLehose (1857-1943) was Ferguson’s agent at the Manzoni sale.

Annotations: Copious 16th-century marginal annotations in Latin in two hands;  in Cap. xxiiii "De Origine Picturae", at the foot of h7v, the text has been augmented by a lengthy manuscript note relating to "Raphael sanctus vrbinus pictor" (i.e. the painter Raphael (1483-1520)) - this has been copied from a later edition of this work;  frequent underlining;  number “II. A. 219” written in purple ink (and lightly scored out in red ink) on front pastedown, other numbers in pencil on front pastedown “16,008” and “226”;  the initials "R.C"  in pencil on rear pastedown.

Provenance: Charles Spencer (1675-1722), 3rd Earl of Sunderland:  shelfmark of the Sunderland Library on free front endpaper “B6:58” in ink and lightly scored through in pencil, below which is the subsequent Sunderland shelfmark in pencil “106.B.16” (see S. De Ricci, 'English collectors of books & manuscripts, 1530-1930', p. 39);  on rear pastedown in pencil “S 12892” i.e. lot 12892 (p. 952) in 'Bibliotheca Sunderlandiana:  sale catalogue of the truly important and very extensive library of printed books known as the Sunderland or Blenheim Library. The fifth portion' (London:  1883);  sold to Bernard Quaritch, bookseller, for £0.10.0 according to the printed list of prices and purchasers’ names appended to the Sunderland sale catalogue.
