Binding: | Germany, 16th-century blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards. Both covers decorated with intersecting double fillets to form a centre panel bordered by two frames. The panel is divided by fillets from corner to corner into four triangles and decorated with a lozenge-shaped fleur-de-lys stamp and a stamped scroll (lettering unread); the same stamps decorate the first frame; the outer frame is undecorated; remains of two brass clasps, catch plates on front board; faint traces of a manuscript title on spine; manuscript title ‘SENECA’ on upper edge of text block; front and rear parchment pastedowns are bifolia from a late medieval manuscript whose Latin text, in two columns, relates to the monastic life.
